Within These Walls

by Brian Jones

Within these four walls
there is little adornment.
A door with two hinges.
A sliding latch.
Two steel bars for
supporting those in need.
The same small brown tiles
sport the floor
and half the walls.
The other two walls
of hollow gray metal
have a gap above
and a gap below.
A small steel box
dispenses the paper I write on
and my chair has a handle
for flushing the dreams
that I’ve lost as I’ve sat here
for the last half an hour.
