What I Didn't Know

I thought I saw
a star burn out
just before I went to sleep.

Camping with friends,
the last to turn in
for the night.

And as I lay there,
eyes trained skyward,
a glowing orb quickly waned.

A most disturbing sight,
watching a massive life die
before submitting to slumber.

I wondered if a sign it was
of my coming passing.
In the morning, would I wake?

I tried to tell myself
the nature of the sight
was only in mind's eye.

Convinded not was my Soul,
nor convinced my Heart,
nor body or mind in any part.

I cannot deny I saw
a thread of space removed
though other pole I deign to prove.

What purpose was my
sight of this?
What change about to bring?

It has left me cold,
Unsheltered,
barren and alone.

For though I did
not know it,
that star, it was my home.
