Roughing it Out

by Brian Jones

Often it is difficult to see
how what you are doing
will get you to where you want to be.

Rough hewn wood and a flat of steel.
They could be made into many things . . .
or left as nothing but what they are.
Most would not see them and think Medieval.

But each scrape of the rasp and zip of the file
removes a decade, until I finally arrive
slogging through the mud
preparing for battle
with crossbow in hand.
