Day 5

Added 28 May 2001

TREAD LIGHTLY! For more information on responsible wheeling, go HERE or HERE Ziggy at dirtroad.com says it best, "Use your 4-wheel drive to enjoy the environment, don't use the environment to enjoy your 4-wheel drive!"

Wednesday promised to be a shorter day, as there were fewer side trips, so we started out at eight o'clock. There were a lot of great views the second day, but we stopped less frequently. More beauty along the WRT. Part of our route for the day.
Dave, Erik and Charro negotiate the trail near an overhanging rock. The trail goes VERY near to some very steep cliffs at various points along the way. One of many typical steep canyons that we crossed the headwaters of.
Our first side trip was a hike out to Fort Bottom Ruin. Fort Bottom Ruin is believed to be an old lookout fort built 750 years ago by the Freemont people. It is amazingly intact, most likely due to it's remoteness and lack of visitation. The tower was high up on an isolated plateau overlooking a large meander bend of the Green River. Eric and I stuck close to each other on the hike and had a nice conversation as we enjoyed the fort and another historic site down by the river. Lookout tower, message center, or fortified tower? You be the judge.
This one won't survive a big flood . . . I was amazed to find the door still present. They normally get taken and used for tables. The site by the river was a cabin built around the turn of the century. It too was amazingly intact, but it was easy to tell that the lookout tower above would long outlast the cabin below, not only because of it's location, but because of it's superior construction.
THE BEAST lovin' the scenery. The group rolls on. Down to the Green River!
After the hike, we all went down the hill to Potato Bottom A campsite for lunch. It was a nice camp site, but I can imagine the bugs would be horrible in the evening and nighttime hours. It was a great spot for a lunch break though. After lunch we continued up the road and four of us took a spur road out to Moses and Zeus rock. Rick and Maris decided not to do the spur, and continued back to Moab. The drive up to Moses and Zeus was neat, but Moses and Zeus were a bit of a let down. No one could figure out which spire was Moses and which spire was Zeus. In the end, everyone decided that the drive was worth it, but that they liked the monkey rock behind Moses and Zeus better.
Glad we didn't see this on the way in! That signaled our last real stop of the day, and from there we stayed pretty low and close to the Green River until we reached Mineral Bottom, the exit point for the White Rim Trail. We switch-backed up to the upper level and headed back to Moab, arriving in town by about 4:30 that afternoon. Jeff and I re-supplied in town, got cleaned up at the Lion's Back showers, and quickly set up camp at Sand Flats before heading out for one last group dinner at La Hacienda.
Over dinner, Dave and I discussed plans for the following day, and decided to do a trail called Steel Bender while Eric and Dar went to Arches National Park. We got back to camp by around 7:30, and both Jeff and I crashed out early.

Proceed to DAY 6

If you're in the Tucson area, drop me a line and we can go wheelin' sometime.

Speaking of which, if you own a Highrider/ZR2/BlaZeR2, or want to find out more about the best little 4X4's around, check out these great sites:

http://www.zr2.com and http://www.zr2hr.org

There is also a ZR2 discussion group, which is very fun for talking about our special trucks and in getting ideas, help, and useful information. I have learned a great deal from the list. You can join by sending an e-mail to mailto:zr2@zr2hr.org with the word "SUBSCRIBE" (without the quotes) in the subject line.
