I'm just getting started with this section, so please bear with me.
If anyone tells me that they want to travel overseas, but they can't decide on where to go, my response is always quick, decisive, and full of vigor: "Egypt!" I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a couple weeks in Egypt in the winter of 1993/94 during a trip to Africa. (Kenya was my other destination.) A meager 16 days was not nearly enough time for such a wonderful place. Egypt is so much more than the pyramids at Giza.
The photo shown above embodies Egypt even more fully than the pyramids. In the midst of Cairo, a city with a population of over 25 million people, a place with modern apartment complexes like the one shown here; there stands a donkey, perhaps the oldest beast of burden. In the chaotic streets of Cairo, sports cars vie with donkey carts and camel drives for dominance.
Civilization: Define that for me if you would . . . . . Ancient civilization. Modern civilization. Both are Egyptian civilization. Buildings that are 3000-5000 years old stand next to buidlings less than 10 years old. Where else but Cairo, a city of over 25 million people, is it possible to experience traffic jams caused by huge camel drives through the heart of a major metropolis? If you spend enough time in Egypt, BMW's sharing the road with donkey carts makes perfect sense. Egypt is a place where history is an integral part of the present.
