I have found a number of resources for anyone interested in learning more about Francisco de Zurbaran ans his art. There aren't too many resources available on the Internet, but there are a number of books about him. Some of them are very obscure and may be impossible to find without doing an interlibrary loan. (I found most of these at the University of Arizona library.) I have re-worked this page a bit. I have now put internet links here along with the books, to make this a complete reference guide. I would like to relay a special thanks to Erin S., who has given me a large number of the references displayed here. THANKS ERIN!
Here are a few links to other Zurbaran pages.

BOOK INFO | BRIEF DESCRIPTION |
"Zurbaran, 1598-1664", by Gallego, Julian, Rizzoli International Publishers, 1977. ISBN: 0847801187. | You should be able to find this book. It is a nice big book about Zurbaran. Most of the book is dedicated to reproductions of his paintings, but there is a fair sized bio and critical analysis of Zurbaran in the book as well. |
"Zurbaran", written by Juan Antonio Gaya Nuno, copyright 1948. | This one is in Spanish, has a bit of information about Zurbaran along with a bibliography (out of which you might be able to find other sources of information about Zurbaran). I couldn't find an ISBN number on the book. |
"Estampas de Zurbaran", by Calzada, A.M. and Marina, L.S., Editorial Canosa, Barcelona Spain, 1929. | This is another book that is in Spanish. |
"Francisco de Zurbaran", Jose Cascales y Munoz, copyright 1918 by Frederic Fairchild Sherman. | The book has a biography and some of Zurbaran's writings and letters. |
"Fin y muerte de Francisco de Zurbaran", Maria Luisa Caturla, La Imprenta de Lango, Madrid, 1964. | You might be interested in this one, as it has a photocopy of what seems to be Zurbaran's last will and testament. |
"Zurbaran", Paul Guinard, Edition du Temps, Paris, France, 1960. | This one is in French so I have no idea what it says. |
"Zurbaran", Hispanic Society of America, New York, 1925. | This one is extremely tiny (about the size of a small pocket calendar), so I don't imagine it has much useful information, but it might be worth checking out. |
"Francisco de Zurbaran", Hugo Kehrer, copyright 1918 by Hugo Shmidt Verlag Munchen. | This one is in German. It appears to have letters either written to or from Zurbaran (or both) so you may be in luck if you understand German. |
"Sensibilidad de Zurbaran", Francisco Juan Sanches Canton, Universidad de Granada, 1944. | This book is quite small, so probalby doesn't have much information of the type that you are interested in. |
"Zurbaran", Aldeasa editors, Grandes Maestros Series. ISBN: 84-89162-44-1. Deposito legal:M-29.534-1995 |
This reference was given to me by Tina, who found my site after a trip to Spain.
"As far as resources on Zurbaran go I was able to purchase a book on Zurbaran (in English) while I was there. The book is titled Zurbaran and its part of the Grandes Maestros series. It is put out by Aldeasa editors and the ISBN # is 84-89162-44-1. There is also another number beneath this one but I'm not sure of its significance, Deposito legal:M-29.534-1995 I hope you will find this information useful. The book is O.K., the first 17 pages contain information about Zurbaran's life and the rest of the book is pictures of his works." |
Brown, Jonathan. ^Francisco de Zurbaran^ Harry N. Abrams, Inc. Publishers, New York (year unknown) | This reference was given to me by Erin S. |
Soria, Martin S. ^The Painting of Zurbaran^. Phaidon Press, London. 1953 | This reference was given to me by Erin S. |
Baticle, Jeannine and Metropolitan Museum of Art. ^Zurbaran^ Harry N. Abrams., Inc. New York. 1987. | (Another reference from Erin S.)There was a Zurbaran exhibit in the 1980's at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (I think '87) and this is the catalogue from the exhibit. It is very informative, the introduction is a wonderful biography by Baticle, there is an essay for every painting, and most essays are a good mix of critical analysis and explanation about the story depicted. |
(More info from Erin S.) There is also a wealth of information in art periodicals such as Apollo, Burlington Magazine, Art Journal, Arts Review, Connoisseur, The New Criterion, Art News, American Artist, Art and Artisans, Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Wallraf-Richartz-Jahrbuch, and The Magazine Antiques.
